Ingredients

Scale

For the Sandwiches

  • 6 slices white bread (cut into 1/2-inch thick slices)
  • 6 tablespoons Nutella (or as needed)

For the Egg Mixture

  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons sugar (divided)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt

For Cooking and Serving

  • Cooking spray (for air fryer basket)
  • Butter (for serving)
  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sandwiches: Spread Nutella evenly between two slices of bread and press them together gently to form a sandwich.
  2. Mix the Egg Batter: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, 2 tablespoons of sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Preheat the Air Fryer: Set the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease the air fryer basket with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Soak the Sandwiches: Dip one Nutella sandwich at a time into the egg mixture, soaking each side for about 10 seconds. Flip twice to ensure both sides are well-coated but not soggy.
  5. Air Fry the Sandwiches: Place the soaked sandwich in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 5 minutes to start cooking the bottom and sides to golden perfection.
  6. Flip and Sugar: Use a spatula to carefully flip the sandwich over, sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of sugar on top, then continue cooking at 375°F for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until the top is a deep golden brown and crisp.
  7. Repeat and Serve: Repeat steps 4 to 6 with the remaining sandwiches. Serve hot with a dab of butter and drizzle maple syrup over the top for a classic French toast experience.

Notes

  • Use thick slices of bread for best results to hold the Nutella without leaking.
  • Do not soak the bread for too long to avoid sogginess and ensure crispiness.
  • Adjust the cooking time based on your air fryer model and slice thickness.
  • For a variation, try adding sliced bananas or strawberries inside the sandwich before air frying.
  • Make sure to preheat the air fryer to achieve the perfect texture.
