Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Gravy

  • 2 cups milk, divided
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

Vegetables & Toppings

  • 45 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Season and Form Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly and shape into 6 equal patties.
  3. Brown the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium heat and cook the patties until browned on both sides. They do not need to be fully cooked at this stage. Remove and set aside.
  4. Make the Gravy: In the same skillet, whisk together 1 cup of milk and the flour until smooth. Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of milk while stirring continuously to form a creamy gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Layer Potatoes and Onions: Arrange half of the thinly sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, then layer half of the sliced onions on top.
  6. Add Patties and Remaining Vegetables: Place the browned hamburger patties over the onions, then layer the remaining potatoes and onions evenly over the patties.
  7. Pour Gravy: Pour the prepared milk gravy evenly over the entire layered dish.
  8. Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour, allowing the potatoes to cook through and the flavors to meld.
  9. Add Cheese and Finish Baking: After 1 hour, remove the foil and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Return the dish to the oven, uncovered, and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

  • For a spicy twist, add 1 teaspoon paprika or a few dashes of hot sauce to the ground beef mixture before forming patties.
  • If onions aren’t preferred, reduce the amount or omit entirely.
  • Use a mandoline slicer for uniformly thin potato slices to ensure even cooking.
  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey for beef and use low-fat milk and cheese.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day as flavors meld together.
