Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 4 cups peeled, sliced apples (about 3 large or 4 medium apples)
  • 2 cups fresh or frozen cranberries (not thawed if using frozen)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon salt

Streusel Topping

  • ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened at room temperature
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ⅓ cup chopped pecans
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish or a 10-inch cast iron skillet, or spray it with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix the Filling: In the prepared dish, combine the sliced apples, fresh or frozen cranberries, sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir gently to mix all the ingredients evenly.
  3. Make the Streusel Topping: In a separate bowl, use a fork or your fingers to thoroughly mix the softened butter, all-purpose flour, rolled oats, light brown sugar, sugar, chopped pecans, and salt. The mixture should be crumbly and lumpy, resembling a streusel topping.
  4. Assemble the Crisp: Evenly spread the streusel topping over the apple and cranberry filling in the baking dish, covering the fruit completely.
  5. Bake: Bake the assembled crisp uncovered for 50 to 55 minutes until the fruit is hot and bubbly, and the streusel topping is golden brown and crisp.
  6. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let the crisp cool for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a balanced sweet-tart flavor.
  • If using frozen cranberries, do not thaw before mixing to prevent excess moisture.
  • You can substitute chopped walnuts for pecans if preferred.
  • This dessert can be prepared ahead of time and baked just before serving.
  • Leftovers keep well covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and can be reheated in the oven.
