Ingredients

Scale

Sauce

  • 3/4 cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup oyster sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey (you can also use brown sugar)
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon browning (optional, for color)

Beef Marinade

  • 1 pound steak, sliced (flank steak or sirloin recommended)
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger

Stir-fry

  • 2 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup onions, diced
  • 1/8 cup garlic, diced
  • 1/8 cup ginger, diced
  • 16 ounces broccoli florets
  • 16 ounces noodles (spaghetti used as substitute)

Slurry

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  1. Cook Noodles: Prepare the noodles according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain thoroughly and set aside to keep warm.
  2. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, honey, rice wine vinegar, and optional browning for color. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch and cold water to create a slurry, then slowly whisk this into the sauce mixture. Set aside.
  3. Marinate Beef: In a large bowl, combine sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, rice wine vinegar, and ground ginger. Stir well to coat the beef evenly and let it marinate briefly.
  4. Sear Beef: Heat sesame oil in a wok over high heat. Add the marinated beef and sear until cooked to your desired doneness. Remove beef from wok and transfer to a plate.
  5. Sauté Aromatics and Vegetables: In the same wok, add diced onions, garlic, and ginger. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until fragrant. Then add broccoli florets and cooked noodles, stirring vigorously to combine and cook until broccoli is tender-crisp.
  6. Add Sauce: Gradually pour the prepared sauce into the wok while stirring constantly to coat the noodles and vegetables evenly.
  7. Combine Beef: Return the seared beef to the wok and stir everything together over heat until heated through and well combined.
  8. Serve: Transfer the beef and broccoli lo mein to serving plates and serve hot for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • You can substitute spaghetti with traditional lo mein or egg noodles for a more authentic texture.
  • Adjust the sweetness by using more or less honey according to taste.
  • Optional browning sauce adds color but can be omitted if unavailable.
  • Ensure the wok or pan is hot before searing the beef to achieve a good sear and lock in juices.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like bell peppers or carrots for variation.
