Roasted Garlic
- 8–10 garlic cloves
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- Pinch of salt
Garlic Butter Custard
- Roasted garlic from above
- ½ cup butter, melted (113g)
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup milk (60g)
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
Assembly
- 12 King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls, kept in the full sheet form (or substitute with a French baguette of similar size)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Chopped parsley and chili flakes for serving
- Roast the garlic: Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Mix the peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Place in a small oven-safe pot with a lid or cover tightly with foil. Roast for about 20 minutes until garlic is soft and golden. Remove and mash the roasted garlic with a fork; set aside.
- Prepare the garlic butter custard: In a bowl, combine the mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped fresh parsley. Whisk thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and smooth.
- Pre-bake the bread: Lower oven temperature to 350°F (175°C). Using a sharp knife, carefully slice the sheet of bread rolls into two halves horizontally. Place the halves on a large baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly golden and crispy on the surface.
- Coat the bread in garlic butter custard: Transfer the garlic butter custard to a larger pan or shallow dish. Carefully dip the pre-baked bread halves into the custard, making sure they are coated well on all sides but not soaked through.
- Bake the coated bread: Place the coated bread back on the baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 15-18 minutes until the bread turns a rich golden color and is tender inside.
- Add cheese and broil: Remove the bread from the oven and evenly cover the top with shredded mozzarella cheese. Switch the oven to broil or grill setting and broil for about 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbling, and golden brown.
- Garnish and serve: Remove from oven, sprinkle chopped fresh parsley and chili flakes over the top for color and a touch of heat. Slice and serve immediately to enjoy warm, cheesy garlic goodness.
Notes
- For extra garlicky flavor, add more roasted garlic cloves.
- Use fresh parsley for the best herbal note; dried parsley will alter flavor and color.
- If you prefer a spicier kick, increase the amount of chili flakes when serving.
- Substituting Hawaiian rolls with a crusty French baguette will change the texture, making it crustier rather than soft.
- Let the bread cool slightly before slicing to avoid cheese sliding off.
