Ingredients

Scale

For the Cakes

  • 1 white box cake mix (prepared according to box directions)
  • 1 red velvet box cake mix (prepared according to box directions)
  • Green food coloring (10 drops)

For the Cream Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 14 ounces sweetened condensed milk
  • 8 ounce tub whipped topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350º Fahrenheit to prepare for baking the cakes, ensuring an even bake.
  2. Prepare Cake Mixes: Follow the box directions carefully to prepare both the white and red velvet cake mixes separately, mixing each into batter.
  3. Create Green Layer: Add 10 drops of green food coloring into the prepared white cake batter and mix thoroughly until the batter is evenly colored green.
  4. Transfer to Pans: Grease two 9×13 inch cake pans. Pour the green white cake batter into one pan and the red velvet batter into the other, spreading evenly.
  5. Bake Cakes: Bake both cakes in the preheated 350º F oven for 23-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean.
  6. Cool Cakes: Remove the cakes from the oven and allow them to cool completely in their pans before handling to prevent crumbling or breaking.
  7. Prepare Cream Filling: In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, sweetened condensed milk, and whipped topping. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and uniformly blended.
  8. Crumble Cakes: Once cooled, crumble each cake into separate bowls. Reserve about 1/4 cup of crumbs from each color for topping the final dessert.
  9. Assemble Trifle: In a trifle bowl or large clear glass dish, alternate layers starting with one color of crumbled cake, then a layer of cream filling, followed by the other color of cake crumbs. Continue layering until all ingredients are used.
  10. Top and Chill: Sprinkle the reserved cake crumbs evenly on top as a festive decorative finish. Refrigerate the assembled trifle for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld and the dessert to set.

Notes

  • Use freshly baked cakes cooled completely to avoid melting the cream filling.
  • For extra festivity, consider adding chopped nuts or holiday sprinkles between layers.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is fully softened for easier mixing and a smoother filling.
  • This dessert is best served chilled and consumed within 2 days for optimal freshness.
  • If preferred, substitute whipped topping with freshly whipped cream for a lighter texture.
