  • 10.5 ounces cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

Vegetables

  • ½ medium onion, sliced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced
  • 14.5 ounces French style green beans, canned

Other Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups prepared mashed potatoes

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F and spray a 9×13-inch baking pan with non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet, cook the ground beef with one-third of the French onion soup until no pink remains. Transfer the beef to a bowl and drain off excess fat.
  3. Sauté Mushrooms and Onions: Add butter to the skillet, then sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions until mushrooms are browned and onions are tender.
  4. Layer Ground Beef: Spread the cooked ground beef evenly in the prepared 9×13 pan.
  5. Prepare Sauce Mixture: In a medium bowl, combine the remaining two-thirds of French onion soup, onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup, ketchup, water, Worcestershire sauce, flour, salt, pepper, and ground mustard. Stir thoroughly until mixed.
  6. Add Sauce to Beef: Pour this soup mixture over the ground beef and spread evenly.
  7. Top with Mushrooms and Onions: Evenly distribute the sautéed mushrooms and onions on top of the sauce layer.
  8. Add Green Beans: Drain and rinse the canned green beans, then spread them evenly over the mushrooms and onions.
  9. Top with Mashed Potatoes: Spread the prepared mashed potatoes in an even layer over the green beans.
  10. Bake: Place the casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
  11. Rest: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it set for 3-5 minutes to firm up slightly.
  12. Serve: Serve warm and enjoy this comforting Salisbury Steak Casserole.

Notes

  • For best results, use prepared mashed potatoes that are not too runny to avoid a soggy topping.
  • You can substitute fresh green beans if preferred; blanch them before adding to the casserole.
  • This dish can be assembled ahead of time and refrigerated before baking.
  • Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F for safe consumption.
