Ingredients

Scale

Base

  • 1 angel food cake
  • 2 cups Cool Whip (from 1 (16 ounce) container)

Cream Layer

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar (remaining from total 1 cup)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Remaining Cool Whip (approximately 1 cup)

Strawberry Glaze

  • 1 quart fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1/2 cup sugar (from total 1 cup)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1 (3 ounce) package strawberry Jell-O
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Make the Glaze: In a saucepan, combine 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch, strawberry Jell-O, lemon juice, and water. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens into a glossy glaze. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.
  2. Prepare the Berries: Gently fold the sliced fresh strawberries into the cooled glaze, ensuring the berries are evenly coated without bruising them.
  3. Create the Base: Tear the angel food cake into roughly 1-inch pieces. In a mixing bowl, fold the cake pieces with 2 cups of Cool Whip until combined. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13 inch glass baking dish to form the base layer.
  4. Whip Up the Cream: In a separate bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and vanilla extract until smooth. Gently fold in the remaining Cool Whip until well blended. Spread this creamy mixture over the cake base layer evenly.
  5. Add the Topping: Evenly pour the strawberry glaze mixture with berries over the cream cheese layer, spreading gently to cover all the cream without disturbing the layers below.
  6. Chill and Set: Cover the dish and refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours to allow the dessert to chill and set properly, ensuring firm layers and enhanced flavors.

Notes

  • Select ripe, fragrant strawberries for the sweetest flavor and best aroma.
  • Thaw Cool Whip overnight in the refrigerator before use to make mixing easier and smoother.
  • Bring cream cheese to room temperature before blending to avoid lumps and ensure a creamy texture.
  • Stir the glaze constantly as it cooks to prevent lumps and to achieve a glossy finish.
  • Do not rush the chilling process; proper refrigeration is crucial for the dessert’s perfect texture.
  • If fresh strawberries are unavailable, frozen whole strawberries (16 ounces) can be used after thawing and slicing.
