Ingredients

Scale

Sweet Potato Mixture

  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Pecan Topping

  • 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Boil Sweet Potatoes: Place the peeled and cubed sweet potatoes into a large pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook for about 20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender. Drain the water thoroughly.
  2. Mash Potatoes and Mix: Mash the cooked sweet potatoes with 1/4 cup unsalted butter, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon until smooth and well combined.
  3. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the casserole.
  4. Prepare Baking Dish: Spread the mashed sweet potato mixture evenly into a greased baking dish, ensuring a smooth surface.
  5. Make Pecan Topping: In a bowl, combine the chopped pecans, 1/4 cup flour, and 1/4 cup softened unsalted butter. Mix well until the mixture forms a crumbly topping.
  6. Top and Bake: Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the mashed sweet potatoes. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and crisp.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg or vanilla extract to the sweet potato mixture.
  • To make the topping crunchier, consider adding chopped pecans on top after baking.
  • This casserole can be prepared a day in advance and refrigerated; reheat before serving.
  • Use fresh pecans for best flavor; toasted pecans can add an extra nutty depth.
  • If you prefer a sweeter dish, increase brown sugar to 3/4 cup.
