Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Oil

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) olive oil

Spices

  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Liquids

  • ½ cup (120ml) beef broth or water
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) fresh lime juice

Instructions

  1. Heat the pan and oil: Place your skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Let it warm until it shimmers but isn’t smoking, ensuring a good sear on the beef.
  2. Brown the ground beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet in an even layer. Allow it to sit undisturbed for 2-3 minutes to develop a nice sear. Then, break it up with your spatula into bite-sized pieces. Continue cooking, stirring every couple of minutes, until the beef is fully browned and no pink remains.
  3. Drain excess fat (optional): If desired, carefully drain off the excess grease from the pan, leaving a bit behind for juiciness and flavor.
  4. Add the spice mix: Sprinkle the pre-mixed spices evenly over the beef. Stir well to thoroughly coat every morsel with the flavorful seasoning blend.
  5. Pour in broth and simmer: Add ½ cup of beef broth or water and stir to combine everything. Reduce the heat to medium-low, allowing the mixture to simmer gently until most of the liquid has evaporated, about 5 minutes, intensifying the flavors.
  6. Finish with lime juice: Remove the pan from heat and stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice. This adds a bright, zesty finish to the savory taco meat.

Notes

  • For extra heat, include the optional crushed red pepper flakes.
  • Drain grease to reduce fat content, or retain for richer flavor.
  • Can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Serve with warm tortillas, fresh toppings like lettuce, cheese, and salsa for perfect tacos.
