Ingredients

Scale

Puff Pastry:

  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry (thawed)

Vanilla Custard:

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Whipped Cream:

  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream

Optional:

  • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven and Prepare the Pastry: Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a floured surface, roll it out, and cut into squares.
  2. Bake the Pastry Squares: Transfer pastry squares to the baking sheet, prick the centers with a fork, and bake until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.
  3. Make the Vanilla Custard: In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, and cornstarch. Temper egg yolks with hot milk, then cook the mixture until thickened. Stir in vanilla, cool, and refrigerate.
  4. Whip the Cream: Whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  5. Assemble the Squares: Place custard on a pastry square, top with whipped cream, and sandwich with another square. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  6. Finishing Touches (Optional): Dust with powdered sugar or add toppings like melted chocolate, berries, or nuts.

Notes

  • Ensure the custard is completely cooled before assembling the squares.
  • Be gentle when folding the pastry squares with the custard and cream to prevent squishing out the fillings.
