A classic recipe for homemade white bread that yields two soft loaves with a golden crust. Perfect for sandwiches or toast!

Ingredients

Scale

Dough:

  • 1 ⅔ cups lukewarm water (divided)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon instant yeast (or active dry yeast)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or more sugar)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ tablespoons unsalted butter (cubed at room temperature)
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour (divided)

For Brushing:

  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine yeast, sugar, and half of the water. Let sit until foamy. Add remaining water, honey, salt, butter, and most of the flour. Knead until soft dough forms.
  2. Rise the Dough: Let the dough rise until doubled in size.
  3. Shape the Loaves: Divide the dough, shape into loaves, and let rise again.
  4. Bake: Preheat oven, bake loaves until golden and cooked through.
  5. Finish: Brush with melted butter and cool before slicing.

Notes

  • You can substitute honey with more sugar for a slightly different flavor.
  • Ensure the water is lukewarm to activate the yeast properly.
  • For a richer taste, you can use milk instead of water.
