Ingredients

Scale

Salmon

  • 1 lb Salmon filet (or 4, 46 oz pieces)
  • 1 tsp Olive oil

Blackening Seasoning

  • 1 tbsp Paprika (smoked or regular)
  • 1 tsp Brown sugar
  • 1 tsp Chili powder (use cayenne if you prefer it spicy)
  • 0.5 tsp powdered Onion
  • 0.5 tsp Garlic powder
  • 0.25 tsp Sea salt
  • 0.25 tsp dried Oregano
  • 0.25 tsp fresh cracked Pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (204°C). Line a sheet pan with foil and spray it with nonstick spray to prevent the salmon from sticking.
  2. Make Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine paprika, brown sugar, chili powder, powdered onion, garlic powder, sea salt, dried oregano, and fresh cracked pepper. Mix well to create the blackening seasoning and set aside.
  3. Prepare Salmon: Place the salmon pieces on the prepared sheet pan. Use clean hands or a basting brush to rub the olive oil evenly over the salmon fillets to help the seasoning adhere.
  4. Apply Seasoning: Spoon the blackening seasoning mixture over the salmon pieces, spreading it evenly. Use as much seasoning as preferred, but be cautious of cross-contamination if handling leftover seasoning.
  5. Bake Salmon: Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake the salmon for about 15 minutes or until the internal temperature reaches 135°F at the thickest part. The salmon will continue cooking during resting.
  6. Rest and Serve: Remove the salmon from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes, allowing the internal temperature to rise to the safe and fully cooked 145°F. Serve warm and enjoy your perfectly baked blackened salmon.

Notes

  • Leftover blackening seasoning can be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 3 months.
  • Use cayenne pepper instead of chili powder for a spicier version.
  • Make sure not to overcook the salmon to keep it moist and tender.
  • The salmon continues cooking slightly during resting, so remove it from the oven at 135°F internal temperature.
  • Foil and nonstick spray make for easy cleanup and prevent sticking.
