Ingredients

Scale

Steak and Shrimp

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin steak (Select a cut with good marbling for tenderness and flavor.)
  • 2 tablespoons jerk seasoning (Choose your favorite brand or make your own blend for a customized kick.)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (For frying.)
  • Salt and pepper to taste (Essential for enhancing the natural flavors.)
  • 1/2 lb large shrimp, peeled and deveined (Fresh shrimp acts as the perfect companion.)

Yellow Rice

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice (This serves as the base for our flavorful dish.)
  • 2 cups chicken broth (Adds depth and richness.)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (Gives the rice its golden color.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin (Adds a warm undertone.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (Enhances the dish with a mild garlicky essence.)
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (Provides sweetness and depth.)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (For the final touch of creaminess.)
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (Optional for garnish.)

Instructions

  1. Preparation of Steak: Season the flank or sirloin steak evenly on both sides with the jerk seasoning, salt, and pepper to enhance its flavor.
  2. Cooking the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned steak and cook for 4-5 minutes on each side or until it reaches your preferred doneness. Remove from skillet and let it rest for a few minutes to retain its juices, then slice thinly against the grain.
  3. Cooking the Shrimp: In the same skillet, heat the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Season the shrimp with jerk seasoning, salt, and pepper. Add the shrimp to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until they turn pink and are cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  4. Preparing the Yellow Rice: In a medium saucepan, combine the rice, chicken broth, turmeric, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover, and let it simmer gently for 15-20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Finishing the Rice: Remove the saucepan from heat, stir in the butter, and fluff the rice gently with a fork to combine and add creaminess.
  6. Serving: Spoon a generous portion of the yellow rice onto each plate. Top with sliced jerk steak and cooked shrimp. Garnish with freshly chopped cilantro if desired, and serve hot for a delightful meal.

Notes

  • For extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the jerk seasoning before cooking.
  • Letting the steak rest after cooking helps keep it juicy and tender.
  • If fresh shrimp is unavailable, frozen shrimp can be used; just thaw properly before cooking.
  • Use chicken broth with low sodium to better control the salt levels in the rice.
  • Leftover steak and shrimp can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
